CAPTURED BY THE RUSSIANS.
IMPORTANT BLACK SEA PORT. (Received April 19, 10.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 18. A Reuter's message from Petrograd stated that the Russians have captured Trebizond. The fall of Trebizond marks a further important achievement by the Russians m Asia Minori Trebizond is the capital of a province of north-eastern Asia Minor, and a flourishing Black Sea port. It ;? is ' surrounded by walls, outside of which were_ Christian suburbs, though ilie population there has probably been wiped out m the dreadful massacres of Armenians. The harbor is only a roadstead, but prior to the war Trebizond had regular communication, with Constantinople, the mouth of the Danube, and Mediterranean j>orts. The city had silk manufactures which m recent years have been more or less decadent. Its population was 50,000. On the capture of Constantinople by the Byzantine family, Alexis founded the Empire of Trebizond — which stretched from the Pbasis to the Halys — and repelled the Turks till 1462.
