German battleships carrying seventeen inch guns has been recognised for some time. , Mr James Douglas, * writing m the Daily News, states that a seventeen I inch naval gun was used to shell Dunkirk. One expert said seventeen inch wduld require special ships and it wus ridiculous to suggest they could be puton ships built for fifteen inch guns. Mr Spencer Wilkinson declared thai the Anglo-German admiralties are using every resource that science offers to outdo each other. Tlie only test which the admiralty could make thorough .would be a battle. Sir A. Conan Doyle states he would bo delighted if the Germans would try their alleged seventeen inch gun, "Supposing we are still restricted to the. fifteen inch," he adds, "I undertake that three of our shells would get home for every two of the Germans."
