DEATH OF A PIONEER.

♦ The demise occurred at her residence, Kaiti, yesterday, of Mrs Caroline Elizabeth Ludbrook, a lady who had the distinction of being one of the earliest residents born in New Zealand. A daughter of the late Archdeacon- Henry Williams, she was born in the Bay oi Islands, and had attained the ripe old ago of 83 years. Mrs Ludbrook incurred an attack of influenza, and on Sunday last lost consciousness. Her end came yesterday without her having regained consciousness, thus marking the close ol a lengthy career in which she had been personally associated with the • progress of the Dominion, dating back from the " early •colonising days. Her father was a brother of the first Bishop Williams, of Waiapu, and she was thus a membei of one of the oldest and most respected fapoilies in New Zealand. She is survived by her sister, Mrs Christophei Danes (mother of Mr O. P. Davies, ol Gisborne), who resides at Napier, and is now the only surviving child of the lat< Archdeacon Williams. Having reachec her 96th year, Mrs Davies, who came from England as an infant" of only thre< years of age, had doubtless the distinction of being the oldest European residem of New Zealand. Pre-deceased by hei husband, the late Samuel Bloomfiek Ludbrook, many years ago, Mrs Lud „ totook leaves a large family comprising v/ H. F. Ludbrook, of Bay of Is T Jands, &. B. Ludbrook, Te Aute, E. K Lttdbrook. East Coast, Mrs Ken W Lilians and Miss Marion Ludbrook, al with one exception being present at th< bedside when tfoe deceased lady passec airay. The interment took place a1 Makaraka cemetery yesterday afternoon the Ven Archdeacon Packs presiding over a service at Holy Trinity Church and at the graveside in the presence oi a large gathering of the bereaved rela tives, with whom much sympathy wiJJ be tendered in their loaf of one greatlj jored add &r?p&.
