BOWLING.
The Gishonie Bowling Club's season .opened' ' this afternoon ; under ideal weather conditions. There "was a large gathering of bowlers and visitors, in-' jluding many ladies. ', . .'■'■> The president (Mr F. Harris), in: an appropriate speech, welcomed the visiors and bespoke a successful season. He concluded by calling on'Jbs Hiwris :o roll the jack across the green, whicii .hat lady did, amidst cheers. Mr J. W. Bright was then called on, ind he stated that owing to the fact hat so many of their boys had gone to .he front to fight for their country they .were that- afternoon enabled to play bowls here instead of at a German camp. He thought it would be appropriate to nominate two ladies to go round tho bowlers and collect a levy of ls^ a head. Tliis suggestion was greeted with 'cheers and heartily responded to, and the sum of £5 was raised for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Afternoon tea was provided and the games which-: commenced-'. earlier in the afternoon, were resumed. Tho grounds were in .' beautiful condition, and the excellent state of the green reflected credit on the caretaker. The function was most enjoyable. Mr Harris arid the other officers -of the club sparing no effort to provide for the. pleasure and comfort of the visitors.
