AN IMPRESSIVE PICTURE.
GENERAL FRENCH THANKTNO THE MEN. PARIS, June 21. \ ■Sir. John French inspected the Third Cavalry Division, and thanked thp men tor their' (wonderful performance m the trenches at Ypres. Ho described the gas attacks as dastardly. The gas came as a bolt from the blue, and many troops dropped dead on the spot. It was im-. possible to see anything m the darkness (which^was rendered more opaque by the ivsphyxiating fumes), and a certain amount of confusion was unavoidable, but the troops recovered with superb quickness and filled the gap m face of a wall of gas miles long and 'vards high. They could not be too highly praised. He especially thanked the Third Dragoons for their work at the Chateau Hooge. As tlio general was leaving the • men broke the ranks, and cheered and waved their caps. ' . It was an inroressive picture — ■Sir John French m tfie middle of the men with liis hand stiffly at the salute — and 'indicative of the perfect trust and loyalty existing between the troops and their commanders.
