THE BAFFLE FRONT.
The High Commissioner reports : — . LONDON, June 16, 9.50 p.m* Yesterday evening we captured tho Gorman front line of trenches east of Festubert on a mile of front, but failed to hold them during the night against a strong enemy counter-attack. Early this morning, in the neighborhood of Ypres, we successfully attacked the enemy's positions north of Hodge, occupying the whole of his first line of trenches on a front of 1000 y-_rcus u«u part of the second line. One "hundred and fifty-seven prisoners wero passed to our i*ear. A German cbunter-attacß was repulsed with heavy loss. The High, Commissioner roports: — LONDON, June 17, 11.55 a.m. German attacks in the last three days around the village of Laitzkow, near Window, were unsuccessful. The fighting on Tuesday ended in the Russians' favor. In the region of Popel LiariV the Russians crossed the Venta in pursuit! of the retreating enemy. Russian cavalry sabred one hundred Germans, and some dozens of prisoners were taken. Fighting in Shavli district - continues with varying fortunes. Somo villages have fallen into the enemy's hands in Dubissa. Artillery duels havo occurred, on the western front beyond the middle Niemen. The enemy on Tuesday sustained heavy losses, making fruitless attempts to take the offensive. In the . course of counter-attacks in the region east of Mariampol the Russians captured villages occupied by the enemy.
On Tuesday the enemy begun tinbombardment of Ossowiece at 2 o'clock in tho morning. The batteries of the fortress got the upper hand, r In Orkitz Valley during Tuesday night the enemy opened intense artillery fire ! with numerous batteries against the viljlage of Jednorojetz, throwing tens of thousands of shells in n short -space of time. On Tuesday the enemy several times tried to attack tho positions, their efforts ending in the occupation of only part of the completely-destroyed trenches of one of our regiments north of Przasnyz.' The Russians, by an energetic counter-attack, reoccupted all the advanced trenches j which the enemy had maintained since his attack on the 12th.
In West Galicia the battle of the San continues with increasing fierceness. . On tho Dniester fighting along the front Tismenitza-Bystritza continued on Monday and Tuesday to the Russians' advantage. South of Jfdatchcff, near BereznitzaKroulevska, the Russians captured another 500 German prisoners, including 14 officers, also four guns and six machine-guns. Italian "encbuntebs with the enemy were _ successful along the whole front. Particular -importance is attributed to the action in Montenero zone by Alpine troops, who .were entrusted with the task of dislodging the enemy ambushed on the mountain side. Tlie operation began at night, during difficult climbing of rocks, and ended at daybreak with an impetuous attack, whicli was crowned with complete success. x Up to the present 350 prisoners} in eluding 14 officers, have been captured and more are coming.
