FRENCH OPERATIONS A COM PLETE SUCCESS.
TERRIBLE EFFECTS OF ABTIL LERY: MAGND7ICENT ADVANCE OF INFANTRY.
(London Times and Sydney Sun Services.) • (Received June 2, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 1. The Times correspondent m the north of France states that the operations of the French army north of Arras have been a complete success. An artillery officer gives a vivid impression of the principal engagements at Artois. •■'Our cannonade," he states, "was the most formidable of the war. The infantry i attack is prepared by guns of all calibres ! firing on the enemy -s lines for four hours. The violence is increased hour by hour,- then mines are driven undor the enemy's trenches and exploded. The scene is terrible, and is hidden Vy impenetrable smoke, wherein hundreds; of shells are exploded simultaneously. Thousands of bayonets flashed, and the infantry sprang from the trenches and advanced, marching calmly. They carried the first line, and advanced to the second as though parading. It w£s an unforgettable picture. The soldiers, truly incomparable, marched -with their line officers some paces m, front. ' '
