PATRIOTIC CONCERT.
ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE AT HIS MAJESTY'S. There has seldom been a more enthusiastic audience than that which assembled at His Majesty's Theatre on Saturday night, when the Cherniavsky Bros, gave a patriotic concert m aid of the Belgian Fund. The theatre was crowded. Not only was the worthy object of the entertainment an attraction, but so favorably did the talented trio establish themselves with the public of Gisborne by their two previous concerts that many were only too glad of the opportuitny to enjoy such another musical treat. The visitors were given a great reception, and the enthusiasm increased as the recital advanced. The programme was as follows : — Trio, "No. I." (Haydn), Leo, Jan and Mischel Ohierniavsky ; cello solos, (a) "Summer Night" (Sulzer), (b) "Serenade" (Herbert), (c) "Hungarian Fantasie" (Fischer), Mischel Cherniavsky ; . piano solos (a) "Prelude" (Rachmaninoff), (b) "Etude" (Chopin), (c) "March Militar" (Schubert), Jan Cherniavsky f violin solos (a) "Aye Maria" (Schubert), (b) "Valse" (Kreisler), (c) Polonaise No. 4 (Wieniawsky), Leo Cherniavsky; trios (a) "Russian Romance" (Glinka), (b) "Peer Gyht" (Greig), Leo, Jan, and Mischel' Cherniavsky. Every, item was encored two or three times, and the ovations accorded the brilliant performers was well merited. At the conclusion of the programme Mr H. Kenway, acting on behalf of Mr J. W. Bright, j chairman of the Gisborne Defence S Committee, thanked the Cherniavskys for assisting m such a noble cause, for no country demanded more help at the prespnt juncture than Belgium. Not only did he thank the musicians for assisting the Belgian funds, 1 but also for providing such a musical festival for the public of Gisborne. There was an outburst of enthusiasm, when Mr Kenway concluded, which indicated to the visitor* how much their efforts had been appreciated. Mr LeO Cherniavsky modestly acknowledged the tribute paid them, and said he hoped the £6p or £70 they expected to make from the concert would be of some benefit to tne Belgians. Loud and continued applause followed, and the entertainment concluded with the Cherniavskys playing the Belgian, Russian, French and *British_ national anthems, . the audience joining m singing the latter. The net amount obtained was £63 18s 4d.
