SALVATION ARMY.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING SEllVlOi!.S. The annual harvest thanksgiving season m connection with the local Salvation Army commenced yesterday. Tlie •opening day had to be postponed for a iortniglit owing to unfavorable/ weather, but this m no way detracted from the display of produce that came forward. On Saturday the citadel wag a scene of animation^ the result being that yesterday the place of meeting presented a very attractive appearance. With a profusion of sheaves, etc., the building was decorated to represent a harvest field,' whilst a big painted sceno m keeping with the general scheme covered the back wall. In front of the platform was a large collection of produce of all descriptions, tho contributions being most liberal. . '

During the day special harvest thanksgiving services were conducted by Adjutant' Winton, of Wellington, assisted by Captain Atherfold. There were large congregations at all the Services, which were of a bright and interesting nature. At the open air as well as at, the in-' door gatherings, the Wand played special music, which added much to the success of the services. An original and happy idea was introduced at the 11 a.m. service by Bandmaster Stein. During the course of a splendid address, he .said while they were all enjoying the many blessings which came , irom the hand of God it was possible, for everyone to carry some of the sunshine and blessing to those \inablo to seek it, and it would be very nice for some, little token to be sent to their sick comrades.. The bandmaster then illustrated his suggestion m a practical manner by despatching some bouquets with appropriate messages attached to each to their sick comrades. The reports that came back of how much the thoughtful action was appreciated was quite cheering and encouraging. The festival will be continued to-night, when a representation of a day m tho harvest field Avill be made. To-morrow night a special programme Will be given, and on Wednesday night the season will be concluded with an auction sale of all the produce.
