(Special to Herald.)
WELLINGTON, this day
A further stage has been reached m ascertaining tbe yield of this season's ceresal harvest, definite results from threshing haMiig been recieved firom a number of theshmg mill owners. . The returns do not cover the whole area under crop, but they are representative ;ind wide enough to enable a more reliable gauge of -the harvest to be applied than has previously been possible. The threshing returns irom. all the important grain-growing localities show that the wheat yield is well ahead of farmers* expectations. Oats, particularly m the North island, have not threshed out up to the estimate yield as made out from the farmers' returns, but the position m the priucipal growing area* is better. Tlie details collected" from threshing mill owners by" the Statistician's Department show the following m regard to wheat m the counties named, the estimated yield being shown first, 'and then the actual yield: Raugitikei, estimated yield 31.65 bushels, actual yield 34.45 bushels ; Oroua, 29.50—33.54; Maiutwatu, 29.83—31.31; JMastwton, 2t. 44 — 30.72; Wairarapa South, 30.89—25.11; Marlborough, 22.08 --15.33; Waiinea, 34.36—20.39; Waipara, 23.43—31.52: Eyre, 27.90—33.49; .Malvern, 24.94—29.09 ; Selwyn, . 28.73— 35.71: Ellosmer'c, 29.81—35.54; "Ashburton, 24.23—30.19; Levels, 23;45— ',25.55 ; Geraldine, 25.64—31.19 ; Mackenzie, 22.61—24.51; Waimate, 22.57— 21.08; Waitaki, 20.68—22.05. THE OAT CROP . The threshing return's show an average yield of oats equal to 34 bushels to the acre. The estimated yield wa5. 35.45 bushels, but the figures obtained, 'from threshing mill owners relate mostly to small areas, which do not show as high an average as the larger oat .growing districts. The following are the most important returns covering the largest areas from which oats have been cut: — Geraldine County (7182 acres cut), estimate 31.45 bushels, actual 34.89 bushels per -aoe ; Levels County (4192 abides). os.tiiin.aibe 32.71. actual 38.44; Ashley, Kowai, Rangi'ora, Oxford and Eyre (2179 acres), estimate 34.45, actual 37.32; Waimate (2034 acres), estimate 30.08, actual yield 32.18 bushels.
