The Gisborne School Committee met last evening m the library of the school. Dr. Porter presided. Mrs Walker sent an apology for her absence. All other members were present except the Rev. W. Oiaiit, who has leave of absence. The Board of Education wrote informing the committee of the dates fixed for school holidays, as follows: May 15th to 24th, September 4th to 12th, and December 18th to January 31st. On the recommendation of the finance committee accounts were passed for payment amounting to £17. The visiting committee, Dr. Porter and Mr J. Dawson, reported that a sliding window had been fixed m the roof.^of ono room m the infant school, and a similar installation would, m tlieir opinion, materially improve the ventilation m other rooms, about the temperature of which complaints had been made. They also reported on the urgent need for. repairs and top-dressing to the asphalt m tho playground, and the want of sufficient hat , and cloak accommodation m the upper school. Of the two the repairs to the asphalt were the more urgent, and the committee recommended that the funds available should be used for them.
The headmaster reported that the average attendance dilring the past four weeks has been 800, or 9J*?.B per cent, of the roll number. There has been a remarkable number of absences of teachers on account of sickness since the year began. The school was closed on Thursday, INlarch 18th, on the occasion bf the combined schools picnic. Unfortunately tho day was wet, and tbe number of picnickers was considerably reduced. Excepting the inevitable results of bad weather all the arrangements were good, and Mrs Smith, the organiser, is to be complimented on the result of her efforts. 1 Dr. Porter reported what had been done by the School Committees' Association about allowances to committees, and gave an account of his interview with the Minister of Education regarding the matter. The committee instructed the chairman to write to the Minister and place further information before him. Dr. Porter and Mr J. Dawson were appointed a sub-committee to draft the annual report and lay it before a special meeting on Thursday, April 22nd. MANGAPAPA. Miss Martin left for Auckland on the 17th inst., and had since undergone a severe operation. It would be some considerable time beforo she could resume duties. Several communications were received from the secretary of the Eiducation Board. He stated the Committee's application for a second skylight had been granted. The Board had agreed to grant £20 towards the cost of gravelling, provided the work Avas completed to the foreman's satisfaction. The application for a teachers' room was declined.
