CHRISTCHURCH, this day. During the stay of the steamer Tainui at Lyttelton a number, of drums of oil disappeared. Yesterday the police visited the premises of Rudoe Anderson, a sailmaker and well-known resident. He denied all knowledge of the oil. ' A search seemed hopeless until the police discovered an aperture m a ceiling. Inside there were eleven drums. The police subsequently arrested Robert Hempstalk and Thomas Jones on a charge of theft of the drums and Anderson on a charge of receiving stolen property. ; They " were remanded until Wednesday. , While on duty at the Defence electric light stations 1 at Lyttelton to-day Frank Olsen 'and^Owen Car fell tiyer a- cliff. Olsen sustained a fractured skull," and his condition is serious. Car- injured one of his legs.

John Morrison, aged 45 years, was accidentally killed at Palmerston this morning. . He was riding a bicycle alongside a moving traction engine, which was drawing a threshing mill. The bicycle skidded and he was thrown under the wheels of the mill, receiving • fatal injuries. -
