RUSSIAN OPERATIONS.
HEAVY FIGHTING CONTINUES. GERMAN "DIVISIONS OF DEATH." . . PETROGRAD, Feb. 7. Official : We seized an important point of support on the left bank of the Bzura, and captured the first and second lines of trenches and six machine guns near Borjimoff, and took two thousand prisoners near Wtwszkofl Pass. PETROGRAD. Feb. 6. The German attempt to force the defence of Borjimoff by sheer weight and using infantry as cavalry was used m the old days has hitherto failed. The formation was unprecedented since the Macedonian phalanx, 140,000 infantry and 100 batteries being employed along a seven-mile front, advancing sixteen deep. Several divisions were massed, solid m one place less than twelve hundred yards wide. The Germans christened them "Divisions of Death." Tliere was a series, of low hills behind the front, which facilitated the extraordinary massing of artillery. . Tlie Germans had never been more prodigal with blood and ammunition, and they fought day and night incessantly. General Hindenburg abandoned military science, relying solely on reckless expenditure of lives and a hurricane of shells. Supreme attacks were made on Tuesday on the Rawaka, after the Russian artillery had had a day of unceasing slaughter. Tho Russians counterattacked on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday there waa fierce hand-to-hand fighting every five hundred yards. The enemy was driven across the Rawka at Voliachidrowska. The Prussian Guard from Lowiuz, whom the Emperor ordered to show tlie way to Warsaw, was driven back across the Rawka. Fighting continues. Tlie. world has never seen such fighting. Military critics declare that the Gers mans' methods indicate that success is now a matter of life and death, and that the Germans are making a final desperate effort to blast a new road to Warsaw.
