DOMINION'S WHEAT STOCKS.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day. , The Government Statistician has prepared a statement, showing the state of wheat stocks. A census covering farmers, millers, and merchants was taken on November 18, when it was found that, exclusive of millers' stocks, stocks m the hands of farmers and merchants amounted to 228,717 bushels, of which 199,000 were held m lots of one thousand bushels and over. The Government have just completed another census of those then holding one thousand bushels and over, and found that only 13,574 bushels are m their hands at the present time. Of that, 4000 were held under contract sale, and at least 2000 represents fowl wheat ; therefore, it is correct to say that beyond the stocks held by millers there is no milling wheat m the Dominion to-day. If the Government had not arranged to import there would not have been sufficient to carry on until next harvest. The Prime Minister stated that the Government were taking special steps to keep m touch with the actual production of the harvest to safeguard necessities throughout the coming year.
