DROWNED IN THE BREAKERS.
BRAVE ATTEMPTS TO RESCUE
LAUNOESTOiN', Jan. 20. A sad drowning case occurred at Penguin yesterday afternoon. A young woman, Violet Ida Yeo, aged 27 years, a daughter of the Rev. Henry Yeo, Methodist minister, met' her death. At the inquest evidence showed that the deceased, with a friend named Selina Arnott, went for a swim on Johnson's Beach. A heavy easterly sea was running at the time. They had got out about 50 yards, when Stella Yeo, aged 14, saw they were m difficulties, and commenced screaming for help. A man named William Hawkins went to the rescue, bnt was soon exhausted. The cries of the girls attracted the attention of Dr. Smellie and a young man named Jack McPhail, who went to the rescue, and succeeded m bringing both girls ashore. Miss Arnott soon recovered, but unfortunately Miss Yeo was dead. Artificial respiration was tried for an hour and a waif without avail, and the body was conveyed home. Conspicuous bravery was shown by the doctor and McPhail, who ventured out 60 yards m a rough sea to the rescue.
