THE EAST COAST RAID.

(Sydney Sun Specials.) LONDON, Dec. 22. A rumor which got abroad on Friday

morning that German ships were off the coast caused some alarm. The authorities finally found it necessary to issue a proclamation advisiing the people to resume their vocations.

The twin boroughs were sad and dark places^ on Thursday night. No street lamps were burning, and all business had to be conducted by candle-light. The territorials defending the forts behaved admirably and showed the finest discipline under the deluge of deadly missiles to which they were subjected from the enemy's guns. When the fire was at its fiercest, two of the territorials left their cover to rescue a wounded fisherman.

Hartlepool, Scarborough, and Whitby are all zealously pursuing their business as usual. <
