WRIT FOR £100,000.

CLAIM AGAINST COAL.-MINERS,

Messrs Sparke and Millard, solicitors for Messrs J. and A. Brown, owners of the Pelaw Main Colliery, have served a writ on Messrs Reid and Reid, solicitors for the Northern Colliery Employees' Federation, claiming £100,000 damages against that organisation '(reports the Sydney Herald). The damage claimed includes loss of trade, demurrage, and detention of vessels, loss of profits on the sale of coal, and other matters, caused by the miners striking about seven months ago, and still being out "on strike. This writ is unique in its way, for it is doubtful if , there has been a similar one issued before in this State or in the Commonwealth. It -will be a test case.

The strike still continues, and the other collieries that are idle include East Greta, Stanford Merthyr, Hekk burn, and Whitburn.

The afternoon shift strike is one ojj the longest that has been experience* in the Newcastle and Maitland -diC tricts, and when it commenced about' 3500 men were thrown- out of employment. Prosecutions have taken place, and a question has been involved which is to bo brought before the High Court for decision during the coming year.
