In the week ended November 4 the. Bank of England received an influx of £9,023,000 in gold from oversea — mainly from South Africa and the United States — whiteh was the largest sum accruing to the bank in any one week on record. The influx weighed over 70 tons. The Bank of England lent £1,000,000 of; it to the British Government as security foi 1 the Government notes. During the thunderstorm on Monday the lightning struck a totara tree in tijo German Bay Valley (Canterbury). The tree was about 35 fee(> in height and 3 feet in diameter. The tree was split by tho lightning into pieces, some 0 feet by 2 feet. Portions of the tree were found two chains " from where the tree had stood previously. The was cut into 40 pieces, besides a number of small splinters.
