BELGIUM RELIEF FUND.
iTo the Editor of the Herald.) Si", —For general information, may I trespass on your space to say that the following amounts have been cabled to the Belgian Minister in London through this Consulate :—- September 24th ... £4180 October 13th ... 10Q0 . October 24th ... 1400 November Sth ... 1300 ~ November 21st - ..."' 1500 \ j December 8th -■ ... 1000 December 17th •) , ... 1700 December 23rd ... 2920 £15,000 And as Christmas seems a. suitable time to again express the nation's d*2«p gratitude for the sympathetic and helpful aid so generouslv given both through this ofiice and other channels within my Consular district. Writing on the 31st October, acknowledging the amounts received from this Consulate, at that.time, H. E. Count'de Lalaing. the Belgian Minister in London, says: "Once again I have to ask you to convey to all kind contributors my sincere thanks for their continued' evidence of sympathy -frith my suffering i countrymen. I can assure you that Bel- ! -gium will never forget the help she has received from all parts of the world in ! this.hour of trial, and which has donebo much to alleviate her distress." ' Personally-1 desire to especially recognise the self:saorifice of those young people who, commencing with the happy inspiration of Father Tom, promptly abandoned their time-honored fun on Guy Fawke's Dayj and instead collected some hundreds of pounds, >and since then, boys and girls have given up their picnics, entertainments, and school prize money (in this case denying themselves the reward of the year's work) to ,add, and they have very substantially added to the zond in aid of distressed Belgians. Such conduct should ever be remembered, and I shall have great pleasure in suggesting to the proper authority that tm- special feature-of the goodwill and generosity ( of young New Zealanders be brought under the. notice, of H.M. the Queen, who is now in England.—Lam, etc., 0. J. -JOHNSTON, / Consul-General.
