Toomath, who had acted as umpire on numerous occasions. On behalf of the players Mr H. Haude presented Mr Toomath wfch a case of pipes. He spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Toomath's services. The recipient suitably responded". The annual picnic of the Scottish Society will take place on New Year's Day at Puha. The society has been fortunate in securing a first-rate paddock, kindly given by Mr W. D. S. MacDonald. To suit the convenience of the picnickers, the railway authorities are running two trains, leaving Gisborne" at 8.15 and 9.10 a.m. As this is one ol the most popular picnic's^ of the year, judging by inquiries made", this one promises to be no exception. In connection with the readjustment of the Wellington City Council's staff, many ilocal friends of Mr A. J* Paterson will be pleased to learn that he has been appointed to the . position of superintend-- ng engineer for streets and general work, • whilst Mr Murray Moriee. as. assistant city engineer, takes charge of the sewerage and water departments. Under these arrangements Mr Morton is being relieved of the detail work, so as to* carry out the duties of what is practically city general manager. i Captain Makepeace, who had charge of the steamer Kaipara- at the time she was captured and sunk by the Gerrtian ermed merchantman Kaiser Wilhelm der j Grosse, has how received command of the steamer Middlesex, which was ac j_ | vertised to leave Liverpool for Australian ports on December 9. Practically all the members of the crew of the Kaipara will be on the Middlesex, which was previously known as the Knight Bachelor, but which has been bought and re-named by the Federal Steam Navigation Company. A Press . Association message from Dunedin states : A man named Herbert Maurice Hurren dropped dead in Stuart street at 11.40 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Deceased, who was apparently about 46 or 50 years of age, had evidently been working as a farm or station manager. Papers on the body indicated that Hurren had been working recently for White Bros., Waikaka, and in Windsor district, Oamaru. He came to town about two days ago. The police are anxious to get further information as to his identity. A story which illustrates to a large degree the keenness which the young mon of the country arts displaying in the matter of volunteering for service, was told to a Napier reporter by a resident, He came ia contact with • a number of men who had just come down from Gisborne. Thev left jobs of from £3 to £4. at stations north of Gisborne, and hearing that they would have no trouble in getting away, threw up their several duties, and went on to the northern town.. Thev passed the necessary examination, and after waiting about for several days were told that there was no room. Thev werd keenly disappointed and decided to come to Napief. They are now living on the.ir own resources and anxiously waiting to be called on bv the military authorities. ... Mr Frank Auld, of the Post and Telegraph Office, has received notice of transfer to Wellington, where he will joiu the staff in the secretaryfs office. During, the seven years- he has been in Gisborne Mr Aula* has become very popular, his genial manner having won for him a host of friends! He is a prominent hockey player and cricketer, in which circles he will be greatly missed. Mr Auld has been a keen helper in Y.M.C.A. work in connection with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. For several years ho lias been leader of St. Andrew's Young Men's Bible Class, which has grown to be one of the largest classes of its kind in New Zealand duruig his term of leadership. Mr Auld will be leaving Gisborne towards the end Of next month.
