RUSSIAN TRIBUTE TO AUSTRIANS

PETROGRAD, October 14. A Czech offioer thus describes the effect on the Austrians of the Russian artillery and the Cossacks : "Your artillery kills us not by: twos and threes, but by tens and twenties at a time. Trenches afford little protection. When we hear your fire we crouch at the bottom of the trenches praying to God for our preservation, yet a little longer. "Aa' for Cossacks, the very word keeps officers and men from sleep. We fear them more than fire. They don't surrender. I have seen your wounded m hospital, but not a single Cossack . FORMIDABLE AUSTRIANS. It has been a common impression, after the great defeats of the Austrians m Poland and Galieia that the fighting value of their army is much, inferior to the German.. In this respect it is interesting to read the judgment of " a Russian artillery- offioer who has been taking part m the Galician campaign, published m an Odessa newspaper. He writes: "My opinion of the Austrian army is that it is not at all behind the German. I had a personal opportunity to convince myself. The Austrians fought stubbornly and energetically We had to deal with a strong, obstinate, and well equipped enemy. Their army was well equipped and well armed, ammunition was plentiful, and the artillery worked splendidly the . whole time, though no better than ours. In the last righting m the environs of Lemberg the Austrians comported themselves exceptionally bravely, and our victory was not so cheaply bought as it is commonly believed. I am convinced that if We succeeded m beating the Austrians we shall also beat the Germans." _ . .
