MATAWAI SPORTS CLUB.
Last night a good number of enthusiasts met at the Public Hall for the annual meeting of tho Sports Club. The president (Mr Fleming) explained that the meeting had been called rather earlier than at first intended, but this was done on account of the local club intending to hold the sports on New Year's Day, if it was found that Rakauroa did not intend to 'hold sports this season. It was decided to ask the secretary of the Gisborne Athletic and Cycling Association if it would give Matawai the option of first refusal for New Year's Day. Mr Fleming was re-elected as president, Mr Tunnicliff and Mr C. Loan were returned as joint secretaries, and Messrs' Robinson, M. McKenzie, and Cockerill were elected" vice-presidents. The programme committeo was then elected, and the club may feel confident that Messrs Murray, M. McKenzie and McKay, together with the two secretaries, will put an such a programme for the coming sports as has not yet been equalled m Matawai. Tho amount of £70 was voted for prize-money for the coming sports, ami* it is quite clear that Matawai will Hold the honor of conducting the largest country sports m the Poverty Bay district. Mr Cockerill mentioned that he was quite sure that the members of tho sports club wero not unmindful of tho great distress and want 0f relief m different parts of our great Empire at present. He would therefore ask the club for its support m relieving some of the distress. Tim- members at once responded, and showed their true patriotic feeling and desire ,to comfort some by voting that the whole of the net profits from this meeting bo devoted towards ' the relief of thoso m distress caused by .the. present great trial of tjie Empire.
