The first broadside from the Russian flagship caused an explosion on tho Goeben. After a quarter of an hour's fight the Goeben disappeared m the mist aflame. The Goeben is a battle cruiser of 22,600 tons displacement, built at Hamburg m 1911. having a speed of 28.6 knots, being the fastest battleship of the German navy. She was armed -with 10 11-inch, 12 5.9-inch, and 12 3.4-dnch guns, with 4 torpedo tubes. Her complement of men totals 1015. The Goeben and Breslau were near Gibraltar at the opening of the war, and escaping the pursuit of the British fleet, made for Constantinople, where it was alleged they had been sold to Turkey. The sale, however, was a subterfuge. The Goeben'g German officers and crew remained __ on board, and they took the vessel into action against Russia, thus opening hostilities involving Turkey.
