STATEMENT BY CHANCELLOR OF EXCHEQUER.
TWO MILLION MEN UNDER ARMS THREE . MILLIONS IN A FEW ' MONTHS. (Received Nov. 18, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 17. Mr Lloyd George, speaking m the House of Commons, estimated the year's expenditure at £206,924,000. m addition to £328,443,000 war expenditure. The probable deficiency would be £339,571,000. The first year of the war would cost at least 450 millions. Tho largest sura Britain had previously spent on war m a single year was 71 millions. The beer duty is'to be increased halfpenny tho half -pint, and tea increased threepence ; thero will be no extra whisky tax. The British expenditure d_ higher m proportion than tnat of any other country. The nation ha 3 already had at least two million men under arms, and it is confidently anticipated there will be three milkons m a few months. Separation allowances alone would then cost 65 millions annually.
