AUCKLAND SENSATIONS.

•:;.- -. AUCKLAND, this day. •>. Auckland has .recently been experiencing some sensations. A fortnight ago, a woman was murdered m Nelson tetreetyher assaiiant attacking her most ferociously, breaking her jaw, twice cutting, her throat, thrice stabbing her 1 through, the liead, twice through the lungs, -and once through the heart, ■while her. breast was a mass of knife bhvuets;- representing 25 wounds ili all. The murderer is still at large. It is the opinion of the medical men who conducted the post mortem that the woman's assailant- was left-handed, used aJi ordinary pocket knife, and must have badly cut his hand while making his demonical attack on the woman. A few nights later another woman Was found dead, floating j alongside a boat m the harbor, at the foot of the Nelson street' wharf, and there are many suspicious circumstances attaching to her death. In fact it is understood that tho police are inclined to th© opinion that jboth deaths are attributable to tho orio cause. .;ln the latter case the inquest has lasted three days, and tho Coroner reserved his decision until to-day. There w^is ;oye4> another sensation m Park Avenue \ a> night or; two ago. .At about 10 o'clock : on . the night m? question " 0. number of people wove returning along Park Avenue, after attending a Sunday school concert which had been* held m Qr&fbon rood, , and amongat them was a Hfctle girl aged 11 years, who was accompanied by. a girl friend a few years younger felian • herseif. When the children reached Park Avenue they were accosted by a strange man who offered to 'accompany the older girl home- She declined his offer, buit while shs was speaking to the stranger her companion ran away. Tho man then picked, her up m his arms, put his hand over .her, mouth and nose, and commenced." to jrtm with "her along Carlton Gore road m the direction of the Domain. He had carried her about 100 yards when the girl managed to scream, and her ccy attracted the attention oi a resident, Mr Matthews, who ran out on to the footpath to see what was the matter. Mr .Matthews was speedily j^iriedriby about a dozen other people. Finding himself about to b« pursued the' niari~dropped ; his burden, and ran swiftly- m the. direction of Glasgow terrace, with a crowd m hot putrs'iit. The chase was maintained for fully 300 yards, where .the fugitive noticing an open gate, ram through it, and down n, dark passage-way between two houses. In ~the darkness the man disappeared. A good description of the man has been obtained, and. it is stated that two fingers on: his left hand were bandaged ov- m fingerstalls. The police are making inquiries.
