WRECK OF THE KAIRAKI.

GREYMOUTH, last night. The nautical inquiry into the wreck. of the Kairaki was opened this morning before Mr J. O. Evans, S.M., and Captaias Black and H. Hambleton, assessors. Captain McPherson, acting harbormaster, said it was evident from the position, of the wreck that the vessel got out of control {otherwise she would have been two miles further out, It was quite possible, with the wind and strong tide on. the night of the wreck, for the vessel to drift into her present pO3ition% The wreck WQs\in 12 fathoms of water. Witness did not think the captain would attempt to anchor m tlxat depth- James Anderson, Harbor Board signalman, said he saw no signals of distress, Captain Baldwin, of the Kittawa, gave evidence as to the nature of the weather on the night of the wreck. The other evidence was purely formal. The Court takes evidence at Hokitika to-morrow.
