GERMANS IN DUtE* STRAITS.
LONDON, Oct. iy. Ma 1 Philip Gibbs, ijhe war correspondent, telegraphs that the Allies have made striking progress since the fall of Antwerp. The Germans have abandoned Courtrai,' and have been literally flung back m a crowded mass and m dire straits on their lines of communications, relinauishing > ground . .for which they sacrificed thousands of lives. During recent fighting m the French "Black" country, territorials m one locality held trenches m evident difficulty against un* equal German antagonists. The French General decided on a quick change, and during tho night substituted sevjeral companies of soldier*. The . Germans daringly advanced with the bayonet, but instead of the territorials, swarthy figures suddenly leaped from the trenches, assailing them with savage ferocity and dreadful carnage. Few Germans escaped. Exhaustion, more than death, is weakeninef tile enemy. German prisoners are miserable, sick, starved , and "weary of life. Enteric is making* a horror of the trenches. < ,
