The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, Sept. 21, 8.10 p.m. The Press Bureau states that since the last report was received from Sir John French, several further counter-attacks \have been made and successfully repulsed. The Government bulletin issued today states : — The Allies left has made further slight progress on the OSse. All attempts of tho Germans to break the front between. Craonne and Rheims have been repulsed. The Germans furiously bombarded Rheims Cathedral, which, is m flames. The Allies have taken the village, of Souvain, with 1000 prisoners. In Lorraine, the enemy have fallen back beyond the frontier and evacuated Avincourt. In the Vosges,. the enemy tried unsuccessfully to resume the offensive. Progress is slow, owing to the bad weather and defensive works. It is. estimated that the German losses at Meubeuge were over fifty thousand. The Allied troops on the Aisne have been fighting waist-deep m water, the trenches being flooded. Fighting along the Aisne has been desperate, especially m the neighbor-; hood of Laon, where the Germans concentrated their mEain effort against, the British. The latter's infantry were; magnificent. The Germans' great force made .nine counter-attacks, all being repulsed. The. British losses were 'heavy, but tihe German, loss tenfold, and so enormous that they can have few fresh troops to replace them. 'The Russians have occupied the fortifications of Siehiawa and Sambol, near Przemysl. General Rennenkampf compelled the Germans to retreat from several- points m. East Prussia. ( In Galicia, the German Army Corps under General Von Tretza was completely defeated near y Sandomiors. Only remnants: of the force remain m Galicia.
