On arrival at work this morning, "when lucking over the papers, I discovered that the petition, with the exception of tlia last sheet (which contained six signatures), had been taken aAvay, and I consider that there is no doubt whatever but that the petition Avas removed from my papers on the desk Avhilst I was m the ante-room last evening."
The Mayor : I don't know that we can do anytliing m the matter. The petition ihas gone. Cr. Wildish said they ought to find it- He took it that someone (had taken it, but the letter should be found.
•The Mayor : Can you suggest anything? Cr. Wildish thought that the Town Clerk might tr}' and find out. The Mayor: Instructions should be given to the Town Clerk to find it. Cr. Hill said it was a strange thing that documents should be taken away. It was hard to say 'how it had gone, but it was a serious matter, and* deserved searching inquiry. He made no insinuations against anyone, but the letter had been taken away and there must be some motive.
The Mayor : Will you move any motion ?
Cr. Hill said he did not wish, to implicate ■ any one , but proper steps should be taken to see that the petition was returned, <md if necessary the matter be put m the detective's hands.
It was agreed to instruct the Town Clerk to make an effort to have the petition recovered.
