MAIN TRUNK LINES.
WHEN THE EAST COAST IS LINKED UP. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. In the course of his speech m the noconfidence debate yesterday afternoon, the member for Pahiatua (Mr Eseottj introduced an argument for the duplication of the Manawatu railway line, or as an alternative, the construction of the long-discussed deviation on the Wairarapa line, to avoid the steep .Rimutaka incline. The member, after pointing to the quickly-increasing traffic on the Maih Trunk line between Wellington and Auckland, predicted an immensely increased railway traffic as soon as the East Coast railway, connecting Napier and Gisborne to Auckland was completed. When that line is finished it will, declared the member, be imperative either to duplicate Manawatu or provide for the deviation on the, Rimutaka line, for the present facilities will be quite unequal to cope with the volume of traffic which will confront the railway authorities.
