THE PREMIER POSITION.
C.j;C. PASSING THROUGH TIME OF DANGER.
£100 OFFERED FOR THE CUP
(Special to Herald.)
CHRIST-CHURCH, this day. In his address yesterday afternoon' at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, Mr F. H. »Pyn, the treasurer,, said the financial position had improved during the year to a Satisfactory extent. This year their realisable assets amounted to about £36,000. He noted' that, the Referee gave the figures as £56,000 ; this included some £23,000 for buildings, hut he did not think this sum could bo credited as a realisable asset. lie believed it was correct to say they were .Above £30,000. m . -iis opinion, they should keep a nest egg if £20,000, for no one -knew 'what mignt happen. It was satisfactory to see, therefore, that the oqmmit^ee had some £10,000 above that sum. He was fee/ pleased Avith the i*eport and oala.icesheet.
Mr G. M. Greenwood said he considered the O.J.C. was passing tnto-u-i*-a time of danger, owing to the growth of clubs and . settlement m tho N"'»*t'i Island. Unless the premier club took every step to maintain its popularity, its position. 'would' suffer. Re specially mentioned the growing popularity of the Auckland Racing Club: Ar.otiHM* Ginger was the increasing popularity of trotting. He noticed that ti'" Trotting Club has raised its stakes to £2500, and there was no question that the admirable management of the' Trotting Association and the enormous improvem -nta made had naturally attracted many v f their racing people. lie hoped R-at the management of the C.J.C. would see that it was necessary to make their meetings as popular as possible, m order to meet these conditions. He hoped the committee* would not take his remarks m any antagonistic spirit. It was his wish' to sco that the club continued to hold the premier position m New Zealand that it had held for :o many years. The man m th© str?et said it would be an advantage if a few more complimentary tickets- were i.-.-'ue.l for the meeting.- The autumn meeting was to him a certain disappointment, because lie would have' liked to have seen more stables and more horses there. He thought it would^ be nn adva'.ita^'J if a pup were added to the Nev/ !<■.«■«- land Cup r«ice. If the committee would accept -CIPO towards a cup for the ntxt season's race, lie would be on.y too pleased to contribute it. (Hear, ittar..
