''Some of us who were tip at- Matarae the other day," .said Mr G. M. Thomson 1 ; M.P., when speaking m the south, "noticed when the attacking force was moving acrors the plain that tlie- defenders had only two guns. They were really supposed to have a great many more, and to render the make-believe less apparent, they had a number of puff balls,- and these' they 'let off at intervals, with a great deal of smoke and fuss. Well, the attacks of many of the members of .the Opposition are like those puffs." (Laughter.) Again, lately, when travelling m the. south, h.3 saw half a dozen ducks paddling m two or three iuehes of water. — a mere puddle m tho roadway. They wero making believe that it was a fine large pool, and that tliey were doing very well. "The flying squadron." added Mr Thomson, amidst renewed laughter, "is like those ducks; it is all quack, with a great deal of dirty water flying about,!'
