LADIES' MA'IVJHKS

High School A (4) T- bid Girls (3) : These teanis met. on the Reserve yest.?r•day afternoon m one of they matches which narked .the- opening of the ladies' competition.' A splendid game was witnessed, and for an opening match, play was fast. The teams were evenly matched. Some pretty passing'work was done by the High School girls, and as a re-sult-of these: rushes, l<\; Hill shot three ,-joals during the' first spell. Old Girls also showed; good combination for the first game, but their attacks were stubbornly met: Eventually JR. Malcolm succeeded m sending the ball between the uprights. Play tn the second spell was closer still, and the ball travelled up and down' tli ci field with a rapidity that was:: pleasing, to witness. H' Malcolm added two more, goals to the Old Girls' scorch making Tnatttirs even, but shortly before time . was ' called, M: Favam shot the winning goal for High School.. Mr Olefin was retej-ee. Gisborne (3) v. High School B (0) .* It was -thought when these, teams took the field that the .Gisborne ladies, who were about twice the size of the school girls, would have ah easy; task, b lit the midgets proved very, troublesome, and the older giiis bad by no means the best of tho game. In 'fact, during the first half High School had, if anything, the best of things, but they Jacked experience. With a little more coaehiug, especially m connection with the forwards, these girlg will make splendid players. M.- Morell scored for Gisborne during the first spell, and m the second half Maggie Ferguson and Mi. Third each shot a goal. During the first spell Molly Ferguson collided with one of her own team. Their heads ifiet, and. Miss Ferguson retired for a while with a bleeding nose. Mr Noble controlled the game. MEN'S COMPETITION. Mira (3) v. Te Rati (2): This match, which was tho last, m the first round, was the best witnessed so far this season, and the- play was even better than "tha exhibitions "last year. Splendid combination was shown, and with both sides attacking m turn, play was fast and interesting.' First blood was drawn by J. Pollock, . who scored for Mira, and then A. Hutton, who was 'a host m himself amongst Te Rail's forwards, evened matters. During the second spell R-. Huston placed Mira m the lead again, but only for a short time, for Tureia piloted the leather between the uprights, inakinc the score two all. Shortly before the game finished, Huston scored again for Mira. Te Ran might have done better had some of their men used two hands to their I sticks/ instead ;of tvying "the one-hand style. 'Messrs E. Grant and Fail were the iteferees. ' s " "■'■; ■'■':■' '.'.■ . This i'esult places' Miira m the lead 'in -'the 'Thursday competition with four point*. Kia Ora lia-vfe' two points, and Te Rau nil.' .V
