CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW.
AN ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY,
Under the auspices of the ladies' committee of the Beautifying Association, a Chrysanthemum. Show, the first to be held m Gisborne, was opened at tho Scottish hall this afternoon. The ladies have m view the beautifying of a couple of acres of the foreshore of the Wai kanae beach, and the providing of a healthful playground for the children, and the show was organised for the purpose of raising funds towards the foregoing object. Despite the damage caused by the recent storm, the entries exceeded expectations, and the splendid variety of blooms and the galaxy of colors made a very attractive display, and was an evidence of what can be produced by local flower-growers. In addition to" the exhibits m the competition classes, there , were some fine blooms on exhibition only. An interesting feature m this respect was an exhibition of orchids by Miss Barnes. The arrangements for the undertaking were carried out by the ladies' committee, of which Mrs Reeve is president, Mrs Harrold secretary, and Mrs H. Wliite treasurer. Mrs W. F. J. Anderson was secretary for the show generally, whilst Mi* D. J. Robertson supervised the flower department, and he was assisted by Mr A. Thomson. Miss Hyett,' Mrs Home, and Miss Lena Robertson were stewards, and the judges were : Chrysanthemums, Mr W. F. J. Anderson; other cut flowers, Messrs G. T. and F. Bull ; decorative classes, Mesdames E. H. Mann and Hughes and Miss Barnes. Besides the actual show, there were several other attractions, as follows: - Flower, stall, Mrs D. G. Robertson; ice cream i and refreshments, Mrs T. A. Crawford ; sweets, Mesdames H. White, Stevenson, and Beere; produce, Mesdames Puflett, Kenway, and Haultam; bran tub, Mrs Garrett and Miss Brooke-Taylor. There was also an afternoon tea-room upstairs, under the supervision of Mrs W. A- Smith. , During the afternoon the children s competitions m writing, drawing, and sewing were m progress, a large number of juveniles taking part, these contests being supervised by Miss Greer and Mrs Hooper. Other interesting items were the singing and physical drill competitions between Miss Aylmer s and Mrs 'Olanville's classes.- The proceedings -wero -farther enlivened during the afternoon by the Opera House orchestra, which played several selections. The exhibition was opened by > the Mayoress (Mrs W. G-. SWatt), and this formed her first, appeaiance at a public function since attaining to the position. There was a large attendance, and the display was. the centre of much admtra--lolt''0 It will be continued to-night, when a further large number of visitors are expected. During the evening a short programme ,will be provided.. There will be an exhibition of physical dnll by the Kaiti school boys, and hakas and glees by the Te Rah students. C. Lyndon, for the exhibitor not emplbying professional labor, whereas it was intended 'that the prize should be for the best collection, staged for effect.
