DUNEDIN, last night. A proposal that a New Zealand body be formed to be called the NeW Zealand Society {• for the Prevention of Cruelty to'- Animals did not meet with support at a meeting of the committee of the Otago Society to-day. „ The secretary said jthe matter had been before the committee la*st year, . and it had been resolved that -the cOfrhhiittee was m favor of the proposal for affiliation of the various societies m New Zealand, and thought that much good would be accomplished by conferences of delegates. . Otherwise, the committee was not m favor of the points raised by the Wellington Society. Mr .Fenwick (chairman) ■.. said it was against the interests of the local society to join. The Otago Society's funds .>voul,d not benefit. Mr Mills said it was asking the society to commit suicide, and a motion. , waa. car x*ied that the secretary stating that the committee of the. Ot^go society failed to see how the work oY aiiy individual society was to be advanced: by the formation of the proposed New Zealand society. The annual meeting of the Presbyterian Synod of Otago aiid Southland was opened to-night. T*Ke Ijt'ev. Mr Whyte intimated;-, that th© 4 .Presbytery of Dunediil bad-.'t'ftuie- definite- arrangements for the incorporation of a Board of Governors for the Presbyterian Girls' College, with, authority, to acquire the property and : open the college at an early, date. It was unanimously resolved that the Synod expresses, ita satisfaction with , tlie steps taken by the Pi*esbytery of Dunedin, and connnends the college to the Presbyteries and Session of the Church. WELLINGTON, lust night. Tlie tramway, figures for the , year ended March 31 give 'the following* uesults for Wellington: Receipts 1914, passenger fares £147,046, 1913 £139.909;' luggage £1254, £652; freight car £540, £486. These items, with advertising and mileage fees from Karon' and Miramar boroughs, made the total revenue £160,347, aft ittttease of £8508. The working expenses increased from £161,129 to £125,160, and, with interest, Sinking fund, and , depreciation, etc., the total cost of operations was £144,917, as compared .with £139,936 m the previous year. The net surplus for the year was £15,430, as against £11,903 for the previous year, but special expenditure on alterations to cars absorbed a large sum, leaving the actual net credit balance £3894. Inquiries regarding the Chamber of Commerce complaint that the High Commissioner's market cable is unsatisfactory, elicited the inforniation that these messages are not solely for .the convenience of commercial houses) but for the benefit of the producers, and pro* vide the only indication the producers get of the trend pf Home markets. Commercial houses had their own ■ private advices, which 'they would continue to get despite any messages by the High Commissioner, while the producers, had no such aid, and were dependent entirely on the official weekly Tlie presentation by the loyal women of this dominion to the battleship New Zealand is taking the form of a. pair of the finest silver . orchestral drums made by Hawkes and Son, of London.
