ELECTION CAMPAIGN.
RESOLUTION OF THANKS TO THE PREMIER.
, (Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, last night. At a. meeting of the Westport Watersiders' Union to-night, ah invitation was received from the Social Democratic* party to attend a meeting to be held to-morrow. After discussion, the union passed a resolution: "That the Westport Watersiders' Union, while not averse or opposed in arty way to the principles of sociAl democracy, is unable to separate the democratic party from the United Federation of Labor, or tho party more commonly known as the Red Federation. That being the result of our reasoning, we feel impelled to urge that the policy set out by the leaders of the above Federation during the unfortunate period of the recent industrial upheaval was neither social nbr democratic. We. being a class of workers who intend to allow past event to be our guide as to future rriovfemerits. have, after most careful consideration of the points at. issue, come to the conclusion that the unfortunate position of labor m New Zealand at the present time can only be attributed to the attempted domination by one section of tho workers over the liberty of another section of workers, arid, especially with the pri.;ent personnel of the local branch of the S.D.P., the suggested affiliation of this union would be not only an abhorrence to tlie union, but would, in our opinion, tend to further aggravate a position that has already reached the limit of all reasonable toleration." The union further resolved : "That the secretary be instructed to convey 1o Mr Mass.-*}*, Prime Minister and Minister for Labor, th"* sincere thanks of the Westport Watersidcr*-.' Industrial Union of Workers for the attitude adopted by liis Government during the recent indusIrial. disturbance, and providing police protection for the bona fide workers -throiiirhout New Zealand, and, particularly," for , protection in opening the Westport waterfront." WANGANUI, last night. At a largely-attended and thoroughly representative meeting of the combined local branches of the New Zealand Political Reform Lea-gup, Mr Fred. Pirani, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, and cx-M.P.. was unanimously selected to contest the Wanganui seat in the interest*;, of the, Reform party.
