(Special to Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH,' this day. At the contests and exhibitions of boxing and wrestling at'"- the local physical culture institute oh Saturday evening, in aid of the Summit Road Association, Mr ( Horhibrook said he wished to bring a matter before the attention of thos© present. The Mayor had been asked by the secretary of the Summit Road Association to open the proceedings, as the meeting was a public one, and th© meeting itself public. j Mr Holland had refused, and the reasons he gave were that he strongly disap- ! proved of boxing competition)*, and that some of the men who were boxing that evening might even be tempted to become professional boxers. _Vlr Hornibrook said he was quite sure that that gathering of Christchurch '*, sportsmen would strongly disapprove °f the Mayor's action. Mr Holland waa not asked" to be present at the contests, but requested in his official capacity to open a public meeting for a worjthy cause. Mr Holland's personal views dn the subject of -boxing and wrestling Were of no interest. Supposing that there was any truth in Mr Holland's statement that some of these men might be tempted to become professional boxers;; well, in the ranks of professional boxers were found aa clean, decent-living men _as one could wish' to meet. In /conclusion Mr Hornibrook said Ae would ask the meeting to pass a resolution condemning the action of the Mayor in refusing to attend a public meeting- in -aid of a public cause. There was a unanimous chorus of "ayes" from the crowded audience, and the motion was carried without dissent, amidst applause. '
