NEW PRIVATE HOTEL.
By the addition of 15 rooms a complete and thorough renovation of the old portion, the Bella Vista boarding-house, situated on Whataupoko, near the new Waimata bridge, has been converted into an up-to-date private hotel, and has been re-named the "Arcadia" private hotel. The new proprietor is Mr W. Frerichs, who has taken over the freehold of the jnrojierty, and pun-poses running a first-class establishment. The Arcadia, now consists pf about 50 rooms, 40 of which are bedrooms. It is a twostorey building, and overlooks both the Waimata and. Taruheru rivers. Ono of the features about the bedrooms is that practically every one looks out on to one or other of the rivers. Although situated almost within a .stone's throw from town, the Arcadia is in a desirable locality. Everything -attached has been w*ell thought out, the conveniences are all up-to-date, and the appointments all tend to labor-saving and comfort. The sanitary arrangements are very complete, and the house is lighted throughout with electricity. The kitchen contains a large Hyauiason range, 9ft long, in connection with, which there are two high-pressure boilers, supplying hot water to various parts Of thV building. Altogether there are live bath-rooms and four lavatories. The bedrooms are nicely arranged, whilst the furnishings are on an elaborate scale. The entrance to the hotel leads direcUy to a spacious lounge-room, from Avhich the staircase leads. To the right is a large diningroom, 47ft by 28ft, where seating accommodation is provided for 150 persons. To the left is a cosy smoking-room. As the improvements, without the cost ot new* fuirnishings, run into about. £1800. some, idea will be. gained of the style of the hotel. Amongst the several new storerooms- n,t the rear of the building, there is a cooling chamber, where meat, pioduce, etc., will -e kept. The ChanV ber is insulated, and the cooling plant is driven by a small electric motor. Ther© aro spacious grounds at the back of ths building facing the river, and these Mr Frerichs intends laying out ir tennis and croquet courts. In addition to catering for permanent and temporary boarders. Mr Frerichs purposes featuring wedding parties, for which the es tablishment is well equipped, the cat cling plant being sufficient for 600 people. The Ar.cadi» will be open to receive boarders on Saturday next, nnd no doub: it will be fully patronised. The additions to the.premises were carried out by Mr Chas. Taylor, under the supervision of Messrs Burr and Mirtieild. architects, whilst Messrs Hall and Sonsinstalled the electric light.
