A veritable .storm of protest wast raised in the Legislative Assembly against the new wharfage and harbor rates the Government proposes to levy in Sydney, the objection being that the imposts will adversely affect producers of the State, and drive trade away. It is further proposed to impose harbor dues at the rate of 10a per ton on ships loading, but it will not be charged if a vessel loads at a wharf, the wharfage charged fbeing 16d per ton. It is not proposed to extend the dues to Newcastle. Tho measure was introduced and read a first time.
