NEW YORK SENSATION.
STATE TREASURER COMMITS SUICIDE. LONDON, February 21. The suicide of Mr John J. Kennedy, the New York State treasurer, who- cut his throat at the Markeep Hotel, Buffalo, has caused a great sensation m the United States. It is said that shortly before death Mr Kennedy remarked to a friend that he was innocent, but disgraced, meaning that the mere fact that he had been asked to give evidence m connection ■with the highway "graft" inquiry besmirched to some extent his character. There is, however, no evidence of dishonesty against 1 * Mr Kennedy. Mr Kennedy was to have given evidence regarding the disposition of sums amounting .to almost £30,000,000. Mr Whitman, the State Attorney, when informed of Mr Kennedy's death, remarked, "Poor fellow. He decided there was no other way, out." Mr Kennedy started life as a saloonkeeper. He was dancing the tango till late m the evening before his death, and appeared m his usual spirits.
