MASTERTON, last night. Just before the commencement of the last race to-day, C. Emerson, who was riding Miss Lena, met with a somewhat serious accident.. He was leaving the saddling paddock, when Contea, who was doing a preliminary, collided with Miss J/ena, knocking her over on top of the jockey. Emerson sustained concussion of the brain and severe bruises, but so< n recovered consciousness, and is not likely to sutler permanent injury. Miss Lena was so badly injured that she may have to be destroyed. DUXEuIN, this day. The Hon. R-. IL Rhodes, interviewed by a Star reporter m reference to the Pacific cable, pointed out that the Department had at various times urged upon the Pacific Cable Board a reduction of the ordinary cable charges for messages to and from the United Kingdom, The negotiations extended from ] May, -1912, to February last. The High Commissioner telegraphed that he; had carried a motion for the 'reduction of the cable rate, but notice was given to rescind the motion last month. The Postmaster-General had gent a message approving of the' High Commissioner's action, urging ratification, and strongly opposing tho rescinding of the motion. Mr Rhodes said that the system for the despatch of week-end cables between New Zealand and the United Kingdom was being well supported. The system Mas inaugurated on January 4, ,1913, and tlje return for the year ended Sist December showed that the number of messages forwarded wo* 2645 via the Pacific line, value .€3155, and 539 via the Eastern line, value £725 ; messages received 837 via the Pacific line, and 77 via the Eastern line. Mr Rhodes showed a return md leaf me; the defh-ien. cies on the working of the Pacific cable since its inception. The total deficit last year was £32.269. tho amount paid by Now Zealand being £3585.
