DISASTER OFF CAPE RACE.
MANY LIVES LOST
(Press Assn.— By Telegraph— Copyright.) ST. JuHNS, April 3. The sealing steamer Bella Ventura reports rescuing 30 badly frotbitten survivors of the steamer Newfoundland. Forty dead bodies were found, and thirty are missing. A search of ice floes still continues to the north' of Sydney, Nova Scotia;: . « Wireless ..-reports, .state, tliat '.the Southern Cross is safe off .the.channel of Newfoundland. (Received April 4, 12.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, April 3. • Efforts to locate the Southern Cross have been fruitless. It is feared that the Vessel has been lost with the crew and 170 aboard, but the search is continuing.
Cablegrams received yesterday stated that the Newfoundland was the vessel that had effected the rescue, instead of being the one wrecked. The message from New York stated : "The steamer Newfoundland reports that the sealing vessel Southern Cross was crushed ' by ice and sank off Cape Race. It is believed that over one hundred of the crew perished. Tlie Newfoundland rercued fifty. Many are dead and others are dying. The crew took refuge on ice floes after the Southern Cross sank.
