POVERTY BAY RUGBY LEAGUE.
; The annual, general meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby League Avas held last evening. There Avas a. good attendance and the , enthusiasm displayed points to the ensuing season being a successful one. Mr Rigby occupied the chair. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Sir Jas: Carroll;' president, ,Mr Chas. Buscke: vice-presidents, Dr Singer, Messrs R. Single, Geo. Smart. J. O'Connell. 3. V. Pettie, Chas. Adair, W. Cave, T. NeAvton (junr.) and ll>. PiHtchard; delegates to Hawke's Bay League, Messrs Evans, m'unro'e and Riddell; hon. secretary,- Mr- E. PosavlHo; treasurer, Mr Geo. Smart. The chairman advised each club to lio'd its meeting as early as possible, so as to ensure the annual meeting of dele-, gates being held and tho season started without delay. A letter was received from the Borough Council Stating, m reply to the Leagues request for a ground on tlie Childers road reserve this season, that the matter was under consideration.— -It was decided to again nring the matter before the Council. ■ At the termination of the meeting, r-.i tbe request of the chairman, Mr-H.Kelly, an ex-Canterbury League representative footballer. , spoke a f eAv words on the Leagu^. game. He exhorted the players to play the game m a sportsmanlike manner and to conduct themselves properly on and off the Held. They should train: hard and take the field fit. for by this means they- would give attractive •• exhibitions such as Avould induce the public k to attend. With the support of the public the game Avould prosper, and as they were the pioneers m the sport m this district it behoved them to do nothing that would spoil the f iin of those ' who played m later years. Played properly the game .would ."take," and to achieve that' end they -must all work together for the good of League football. The Chairman endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker, and In. referring -to some, of last season's matches' expressed the hope, that during the current season members Avould refrain from talking and arguing With the'' r-eferee- during the progress of matches.
