BOROUGH ENGINEER.
r~ (To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,— Will: you kindly permit -me space to utter a protest against the attitude assumed by- some our councillors towards the Borough. Engineer. It is a most desirable qualification m an engineer that ho can take charge of and direct his work without first consulting the individual needs of his councillors. Mr Mans* field has shown himself possessed of this qualification and it is most regrettable that on account thereof he is annoyed and hampered m his work by those who should render him every assistance. Isincerely hope sir, that those councillors who have taken umbrage because the engineer is xeq'mring a higher standard of excellence m borough work than has been required m the past will withdraw their present unwarranted opposition. During the short time Mr Mansfield has been m charge here he has done much for the borough with the very limited means at. his disposal. He has shown himself possessed of an understanding and knowledge of the* Borough requirements, including road making and sanitation, and it is to be' hoped the Gisborne public will protest strongly against the motion that will shortly be put to the Council. — I am, etc., FRED. R. BALL.
