H.M.S. PHILOMEL.
At the close of to-day's meeting of the Harbor Board, the chairman (Mr J. Townley) said that members would have noticed the fact that the H.M.S. Philomel was visiting Gisborne, and Wa&'to berth at the Kaiti wharf. He thought it would be a good, thing to have the warship- here find „ 'good advertisement of the improvements to the river.. Proceeding, he- said a further letter had come to hand from . Commander Ballard, stating that as apparently they could guarantee him at least 17ft 6in alongside the wharf at low Water, between the 20th and 23rd imt., he would be delighted to bring tlie ship alongside at Gisborne. He would arrive off the port at 1.30 p.m. on the 20th, and would be glad if a pilot coukf meet him to show him to the wharf, etc. The Engineer-secretary remarked that it had been suggested the Philomel should arrive at 12.30, an hour earlier, to suit the tide for swinging. The chairman expressed the hope that as many members as possible would be present. ' The engineer said the Mayor was making arrangements for the reception, and he took it that the Board would authorise him to have some temporary lighting at the wharf. This was agreed to. The chairman said that this was an event they had hardly anticipated. He did not know what would be done to entertain the visitors, but the cricket match was on the same day, and they could be taken there, Mr Clark: The same day? The chairman : Yes. ' Mr Clarki. Terrible. (Laughter.) OPEN FOR, INSPECTION. The Mayor (Mr J. R. Kirk) has been m communication with Commander Ballard, send the arrangements so far are that the- Philomel will he available for inspection by visitors on Saturday and Sunday, probably from 1.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on each day.
