TRAGEDY AT WELLINGTON.
DEATH OF A SEAMAN.

WELLINGTON, last night. Aii altercation between «seme water.side ,workar_and a number of- men from the 'steamer Makarini was responsible for the death of„ Harjy, Gajlagher, a trimmer of that vessel, through being -felled by a blow last night. It appears that the men from the steamer were having a night ashore and went lo the Wellington hotel. . Here they met some men from the waterfront. Trouble arose and an objectionable word was made use of. Gallagher, it is said, demanded-an-ex-planation from the ' man using the language, but at this stage the barman interfered and sent the men outside. j There, it is alleged, a mail named John Albert Tucker- struck Gallagher on the jaw, knocking him down, Gallagher striking his head heavily on the gtQund. As he' didn't make any attempt to rise' it was perceived that the man was seriously injured, and Dr Henry was sent for, but when he arrived a, few. minutes later he prohuonced life extinct. The body was removed to the morgue, where aii inquest will be held. It is understood 'that Gallagher was. a married man and has a large family living ih England. Tucker was arrested and will be charged- at the Magistrate-is Court..tomorrow with the murder of deceased. ■ WELLINGTON, this day. .John Alfred Tucker -was charged, at the Magistrate's Court' with murdering Harry- Gallagher, ;• a trimmer on the Makirini, and' was remanded till Wednesday. The charge is the outcome of a brawl outside a local hotel, when it is alleged that Tucker knocked Gallagher down. '.•.••■'
