FRANCES WILLARD'S DAY.

To-morrow, February 17th, is Frances Willard'B Day, a day usually observed by the Women's Christian Temperance Union m commemoration of it's founder, Miss Willard, who formed the first National Union m the United States of America m the autumn of 1874, holding the office of secretary until 1879, when she was elected president, and continued m that position until her death m 1905. Mass Willard's fame comes largely from her career as a Christian philanthropist and a temperance reformer. She was associated m her work with Neai Dow, "The Apostle of Temperance," Mary Livermore (of wido renown), and Lilian M. N. Stevens; upon whom m after years fell the mantle of leadership. It is interesting to note that Mrs L. M. N. Stevens was ./again elected vicepresident of the WorldV Women's Christian Temperance Union, which held its ninth triennial convention last year m Brooklyn, New York. At this convention there were present delegates from the 'folloAving countries: United •States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Burma, India, Cape Province, South Africa, Egypt, France, Bahamas, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Belgium. The Countess of Carlisle is now president of the World's Union, and there are branches m almost every part of the world. In view of the coming New Zealand annual convention, which opens m Gisborne m the first week of March, the management committee have decided not to hold their usual anniversary meeting to-morrow. The committee takes this opportunity of thanking those kind friends who have so kindly come to the assistance of members by helping to house the delegates, of whom, a large number is expected. < Tho committee meets on Wednesday afternoon next m St.' Andrew's schoolroom, when further offers of hospitality will be gladly accepted, these may be given to the secretary (Mrs Walker), telephone _12.
