WHAT IS THE BEST PLAY?
AUTHOR SAYS THAT WHICH PAYS LONDON, Feb. 6. Mr Frederick Melville, the author of marijy dramas, gave evidence m the case m which Miss Rosemary Rees, who wro|e fc play called "The' Beggar Bride," is suing for damages on the ground that her "play is plagiarised m the drama, "AflJeggar Girl's Wedding," which was written, by Mr Melville • and : produced at the Lyceum. Theatre. The witness said; that nis drama contained Btock incidents and conventional character's. He was not aware of the existence of "The Beggar Bride" at the time that he wrote^nis play. Writing melodramas was*' easy, added the witness. His greatest difficulty was the finding of euphonious names, and m his trouble he usually referred to a directory or a telephone book. He dictated this particular play" in' less than a week. The best play, *aid Mr Melville, was the one that made most money.
