HASTINGS, last night: Hawke's Bay won the 'toss, and elected to bat on a good wicket. The earlier batsmenr all showed good form ' and scor* ed freely. Hindmarsh (50) perhaps playing the best cricket. Saunders trundled- very well, and secured the : best figures,.. Griminett also doing well.; Wellington's batting was very disappointing, and should have been worth more than 115„..Beecuey played the best innings, though Howe,. Harris, and Grimmett> all showed nice strokes Napier was the . most successful trundler for Hawke's Bay, Fulton and Creed also getting wickets Creed .batted carefully m Hawke's Bay's second innings.
