LOCAL TEAM START BADLY.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The match between Australia and Auckland was commenced at Eden Park to-day. The teams were : — ■ Australia t Sims, Noble, Armstrong, Waddv, Ransford, McKeuzie, Dolling, Collins, Mailey, McGregor, and Layer. Auckland : Hemus, Snedden, Taylor, Horspool, MacCovmick, Brook, Smeeton, Clark, Brooke-Smith, Tattersall, and Somerville. Auckland won the toss, and elected to bat. There was a good wicket. Hemus and Taylor opened the innings, the former taking the strike from Armstrong at 12.20, a maiden resulting. Ransford bowled at thd pavilion end. Taylor opened the scoring by glancing from second leg to the boundary. The bowler had revenge on the fifth ball, Taylor playing on— 4 — l-^. Snedden came next, driving the last ball over for a brace. Hemus drove Armstrong to the boundary, and then placed him through the slips for a brace. Armstrong dropped a possible catch from- Snedden. off llansford's fourth ball, Snedden driving the last for a single. But on facing Armstrong he ran out to his third ball, and missing, was clean bowled — 13 — 2—5. The scores at the luncheon adjournment were : Taylor, b Ransford, 4 : Snedden, b Armstrong, 3 ; Hemus, not out, 19; Somerville. xibt put, 14; extras, 5 ; two wickets fr>r 45. After lurnch, with five added, to the scare, Sommerville was clean bowled by Mailey. At 2.35 the score was 77 for three* -wicketa— Sommerville, b Mailey, 14 ; Hemus, not out, 42 ; Brooke-Smith, not out, 9; extras 5.
